That’s not magic. It’s computer vision trained specifically for botany. Here’s how it actually works.
The problem with “just Google it”
Google Lens and reverse image search are general-purpose tools. They can tell you “this looks like a flower” but struggle to distinguish between visually similar species. Is that a Schefflera actinophylla or a Schefflera arboricola? One grows to 40 feet. The other stays at 6 feet. That distinction matters.
GardenGenius uses models trained exclusively on botanical images — millions of verified specimens from herbarium databases, citizen science platforms, and curated botanical photography. The result is species-level precision, not “this is a daisy.”
What happens when you take a photo

Image preprocessing: Your photo is analyzed for the most distinguishing features — leaf shape, flower structure, bark texture, branching patterns. The app identifies the most botanically informative region of the image.

Multi-model inference: The image is processed by specialized neural networks. One model focuses on leaf morphology. Another on floral structures. A third on overall plant habit and growth form. The results are combined for higher accuracy.

Confidence scoring: GardenGenius returns a ranked list of possible species with confidence percentages. If the top result is above 90%, you can be highly confident. If it’s ambiguous, the app shows you the top 3 candidates with visual comparisons.

Enrichment: Once identified, the app pulls from our curated database of 30,000+ species profiles — common names, botanical classification, native range, toxicity, care requirements, and companion planting suggestions.
Tips for best results
- Photograph distinctive features: Flowers, fruit, and leaf arrangements are the most useful. A single green leaf without context is harder to identify.
- Good lighting matters: Natural daylight produces the best results. Avoid heavy shadows or flash glare.
- Get close, but show context: Fill the frame with the plant, but include enough of the leaf arrangement or flower cluster for the AI to understand growth patterns.
- Multiple angles help: If you’re unsure about a result, try photographing from a different angle — the underside of a leaf, a close-up of the bark, or the overall silhouette of the tree.
Privacy by design
Your photos are processed for identification and automatically deleted from our servers within 24 hours. We don’t build a profile of your plants, and we never use your images for advertising. Your garden is your business.
What’s next
We’re continuously expanding our species database and improving our models. Current priorities include better support for seedlings and juvenile plants (which look very different from mature specimens), region-specific cultivar identification, and mushroom identification.
